Homeowner Finds Front Door Forced Open, Fire In Basement

There's no word on what caused a fire inside a Sioux Falls home earlier this week.

At around 6:30 p.m. Monday, a man arrived home in the 600 block of South Third Avenue to find his front door forced opened.

Sioux Falls Police spokesperson Sam Clemens said someone had gone through many of the drawers in the home. A fire was found inside both a trash can and recycling bin in the basement.

Two parakeets died during the fire and the home received smoke damage. 

Police said around $5,000 worth of damage was done to the home. The homeowner told police that nothing was taken.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue also responded to the scene. Police said the fire appears to be have been started intentionally.
