The Sioux Falls City Clerk has rejected petitions seeking a public vote over a planned city administration building.
Tom Greco says the petition circulators used the wrong form. Greco says this means the circulator's verification is not in compliance with state statute and administrative rules.
Stop the Funding submitted more than 6,400 signatures calling for a public vote on a proposed $25 million city administrative building. Greco said the group used a form designed for state initiatives rather than the municipal form.
Greco says there is little discretion in the matter, and that he has to follow the law.
Bruce Danielson with Stop the Funding spoke with KELOLAND News on Tuesday.
"(We are) shocked and appalled, but not surprised by the actions of the city in this." Danielson said.
Danielson says he wishes someone in the clerk's office would have told the group it had used the wrong form.
"We were substantially correct in everything we were doing. It was a minor issue that should not invalidate the signatures of 6,400 signers," Danielson said.
