Several stores on Mitchell's Main Street spent the day cleaning up water damage, after a water main break forced them to close early yesterday.

VFW workers are trying to decide what to keep and what to throw away, after more than one-thousand gallons of water flooded the VFW basement.

"This morning we're trying to take everything we can get out of there and salvage," Gloria Hanson, VFW Post Commander, said.

"It's kind of just a bad time for this to happen," Ashley Lassiter, Bartender, said.

Just yesterday, construction workers were working to restore the business' sprinkler system when they hit a water main. That's when the water started gushing in.

"It was up to the second step in the basement, I would say two-and-a-half to three feet of water throughout the whole basement," Hanson said.

The break forced the Main Street bar to close its doors early. Since then, the building has been without water and air conditioning.

"I don't know when we're going to open, maybe tomorrow hopefully. It's bad for us because that's our only income right now," Hanson said.

While VFW Lounge is facing struggles, things are looking up for their next door neighbors at Harve's Sport's Shop.

The Main Street store is back open for business today.

"You know it's a little damp downstairs and we've got a cleanup project ahead of us, but it's not affecting our day to day business here," Jim Johnston, Harve's Sport's Shop owner, said.

Owner Jim Johnston says their basement only got minimal damage.

"It' happened where we do have baseballs and shoes and things like that," Johnston said.

Thankfully he keeps most of his merchandise upstairs, and for that, he's grateful.

The Mitchell stores are now in the process of learning the exact cost of damage.
