If you are looking for jobs, now might be a great time to go to Brookings. There are more than 900 open jobs there. The Brookings Economic Development Corporation wants to fill those, which is why it created a new job just to address the need.
Parents send their children to college, and have high hopes they will walk across a graduation stage. Director of Workforce Development Stacy Aesoph's goal is to make sure they do not walk away from Brookings.
"Helping them to understand they can build their career here, right in Brookings. This is a great place to live," Aesoph said.
The Brookings Economic Development Corporation recently created Aesoph's position solely to focus on plugging workers into jobs in the city.
"We need more people here," Aesoph said.
Aesoph will look at ways to market Brookings, and attract workers from all over the region and keep them there. That includes tapping into the student population and figuring out what local businesses are looking for.
"I always refer to Brookings as a small town community with big city amenities. We have a lot to do here and a lot of people aren't aware of that," Aesoph said.
In the last decade, Brookings has experienced a lot of growth with new businesses and big corporations setting up shop. BEDC Executive Director Al Heuton says it is crucial to keep up with that.
"We have lost a number of opportunities to capture growth for our existing industries, simply because we did not have the pool of labor we needed," Heuton said.
Developing the workforce is a role Aesoph plans to really dive into. She hopes she can show graduates and others that the path to Brookings will lead to strong careers.
"We're just a real tight knit community and people work well together and everybody here collaborates," Aesoph said.
