It took a few hundred days to build a certain house in Sioux Falls. However, Monday may be the most memorable.
"Being able to turn the keys over to a first time homeowner there's no better feeling than that," Patty Brooks, executive director for Greater Sioux Falls Habitat for Humanity, said.
The home is for Nyapine Lia. She is a single mother of four we introduced you to in September. She was feeling shy on Monday, and declined an on-camera interview. However, she told us she's excited to finally have a home for her family.
"It's nice and a blessing, yeah. They do it. They try to help somebody with their heart. It's pretty nice, yeah," Lia said in September.
Here is how the whole project started.
"I, about a year ago, received a phone call out of the blue," Brooks said.
Someone in North Carolina sponsored the build, and covered half of the construction costs. The donor just wanted Habitat to name the house after Pope Francis, and represent his nature of giving to and helping others.
"To have that gift given to us by this generous man and then being able to make it a dream become reality for this particular family is amazing," Brooks said.
Kelly Sue Campbell is just one of the volunteers who worked on the house with Lia.
"Just a beautiful soul. She's a really neat lady. She's been really helpful and she really put in her hours. She was always asking, 'What can we do next? How can I help?'" Campbell said.
Monday will come and go, and eventually be just a memory. However, thanks to a big group effort a whole lot of kindness; the days to come for Lia and her family are looking pretty good.
"It is kind of emotional, you know. You see something come from literally the ground up. I wish her the best," Campbell said.
