As we told you during KELOLAND Sports, Vikings offensive lineman Riley Reiff was back home in South Dakota for the weekend. He was one of the special guests at the Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire Celebrity Golf and Walleye Classic at Lake Poinsett. Each year the event grows, and so does the support for local kids.
When you're a professional athlete, you get a lot of requests to support different causes. For Riley Reiff, the choice to come to his home state for some golf and fishing was easy.
"I like to help the kids though. Any time you can help the younger generations and really make an impact to them, that means a lot to me. This is a great cause and I like to help anyway I can. Especially in the state of South Dakota," Reiff said.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire helps out thousands of local kids each year; with daycare, summer programs and more to keep kids busy and safe.
Director of Philanthropy, Amy Sumner, tells us with so many causes looking for money, they have to get creative with fundraising. Which is why they love having celebrities willing to take part.
"They know that they have something special. Their voice will be heard. And when they can support kids, that's what they really want to do," Sumner said.
"It's for a great cause, so I'm pretty passionate about that," Reiff said.
The addition of golf, to this year's tournament is good news for the local course at Lake Poinsett, as well.
"To have this type of exposure, this type of crowd, show our course off to a lot of people who may not otherwise play, it's everything for us," Lake Region Golf Club General Manager John Fraser said.
Sumner says the event sold out this year, so they're already looking ahead to next summer!
"I think the same thing will happen. We'll have to decide if we're increasing our numbers or if we stay the same. I would suggest people register early," Sumner said.
Reiff wasn't the only celebrity at this year's event. Zach Zenner of the Detroit Lions and MMA rising star Devin Clark were also there.
