On Feb. 10, Officer Jason Moszer was killed while responding to a domestic violence call
While Fargo is miles away from Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Police Lieutenant Loren McManus says the loss of any officer hits close to home.
"Anytime you have a loss of an officer in any jurisdiction, it takes just that little bit of our hearts with them," McManus said. "And that's all part of the process of being in the law enforcement family. It's not any different than the loss of a family member that anybody else might experience."
With thousands of people expected for Moszer's funeral, McManus says the Fargo Police Department has asked Sioux Falls police for help.
Honor Guard members will assist with the logistics of the service and more than 30 officers will attend the funeral to pay their respects.
McManus says officers attending the funeral want to show their support for their law enforcement family. He says this bond within law enforcement can be hard to explain.
"You can walk into a department store anywhere in America, and if you know a guy's a cop or a gal's a cop you've got that instant bond," McManus said. "It's just that strong in this profession, because of the things we deal with and the situations we're put in, we have to rely on each other."
Seeing an officer killed in the line of duty is emotional, but McManus says it ultimately makes officers better at their jobs.
"Every time an officer goes out to work and puts that badge on, in the back of their mind there's always that question, 'Is this the day I don't come home?'" McManus said. "You don't dwell on it, but it's there and you have to be aware of it."
