Fourth graders from Yankton Stewart Elementary School recently planted wildflower seeds at the entrance of Lewis & Clark Recreation Area.
The Yankton Press and Dakotan reports that the Yankton Area Pheasants Forever Chapter funded this project, and local South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department staff assisted with the planting.
Students spread milkweed seeds and 40 kinds of other wildflower seeds in the mixture across a two-acre plot outside the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area Welcome Center. The fourth-graders then stomped the seeds into the snow so birds don't get to them before they sprout.
Milkweed is a favorite of monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
Pheasants Forever gave a presentation to students about the decline in pollinators such as honeybees, native bees and bumblebees.
