The alleged murder rocked the small town of Woonsocket last month. Now the man accused of the crime makes his first court appearance in a Sanborn County Courtroom.

33-year-old Matthew Novak is accused of killing 25-year-old Jennifer Gibson on August 31.

About a block away from where the alleged crime happened, Matthew Novak went inside the Sanborn County Courthouse to face some serious charges.

Here is the first look at Novak as he heads into court. Today's hearing lasted about a minute. The judge went through the charges Novak faces. A Grand Jury indicted Novak Monday on first and second degree murder and manslaughter. Novak pleaded not guilty to the charges and asked for a jury trial.

Late last month, it was an intense day in Woonsocket when officers surrounded a home on South 3rd Avenue, not far from the school. Authorities quickly arrested Novak in the case. Our cameras were on the scene as law enforcement investigated the area for hours. At this point, there haven't been very many details released on what happened inside the home in the heart of the small town.

The penalty for first degree murder is a mandatory life sentence in the state penitentiary or death. The penalty for second degree murder is a mandatory life sentence in the state penitentiary.

Today, the judge set the jury trial date to January 11th.
