Former U.S. Senator Larry Pressler is once again turning some heads in the political world. The longtime Republican says he's supporting Hillary Clinton to be the next President of the United States and it's not sitting well with some of his longtime Republican supporters.
Don: Have you gotten any pushback from the Republican Party?Larry: Yes, I've got some voicemails right in here, I could play for you.
Even though Larry Pressler served over two decades in Congress as a Republican, there's no party allegiance for him in this year's Presidential race.
"A guy stopped me on the street the other night and really unloaded on me for supporting Hillary Clinton and I said, 'Who you going to vote for?' he said, 'Well I don't know,' Pressler said.
Pressler, who once ran for President himself back in 1980, says he's a moderate Republican, who switched his affiliation a couple of years ago to run as an Independent in the U.S. Senate race.
"I'm a moderate centrist and the Republican party has moved away from me I think," Pressler said.
Pressler likes a lot of the issues Hillary Clinton is campaigning on like healthcare and social security.
"We really need an increase in social security of a couple of percents and things like that, we got to address some of those domestic social issues for senior citizens," Pressler said.
Pressler is especially critical of Donald Trump.
"He's a different guy on this campaign trail than what he seemed to be in person when I've met him," Pressler said. "He's gotten a little too anti-immigrant, he doesn't really get into issues as much as I'd like, I'd like to see us have a campaign of real issues."
Pressler says he's heard a lot of people say, they don't like either candidate.
"If you don't like any of the candidates, you should still vote, pick the one you agree with the most and that's where I'm at," Pressler said.
Pressler says he'll switch back to the Republican party if and when someone runs as a moderate Republican.
