A former Miss South Dakota contestant is in critical condition after a car crash in Texas. A hit and run on Sunday left Maria Anderson and her boyfriend in the hospital, while family and friends ask for prayers and support.
"They need to come forward if they didn't realize what happened. That would be the best thing for them, is to come forward at this point," Corpus Christi Police Lt. Javier Cantu said.
Police in Corpus Christi, Texas, are on the hunt for the suspect of a hit and run involving a South Dakota woman.
Early Sunday morning, South Dakota native Maria Anderson and her boyfriend, Tyler Sheets, were walking down the road when a truck traveling in the same direction struck them and took off.
Sheets tells CBS affiliate KZTV that he has a swollen calf, elbow and back but should be released soon.
Anderson on the other hand is still in critical condition with reported broken ribs and possible brain injury.
As a former contestant, the Miss South Dakota Organization posted well wishes for the young woman saying, "She is a joyful and kind hearted person who lights up any room she walks in to."
Police in Texas are now trying to use surveillance video from nearby businesses to find more information on the suspect.
"Could be that they were intoxicated. It could be that they have warrants. It could be that they don't have a driver's license and they were frightened. It could be just that they simply didn't see what they hit and don't know," Cantu said.
There is a GoFundMe page setup for Anderson, called "Maria's Medical Expenses" to help pay for medical expenses.
