Construction at the Whispering Woods development usually begins around 7 a.m. each morning. But as summer temperatures engulf the region this week, things are off to an even earlier start.
"It's about getting as much outdoor work as you can done early in the mornings," Zak Fick said.
Fick says preparing for the day starts by what you put in your body.
"Just keep refilling the gallon water jug that I have and eat a hearty lunch. Eat a hearty breakfast if you can and try to keep a positive attitude about it," Fick said.
Across the neighborhood, Richard Wood makes sure his workers are also staying safe by drinking enough water.
"We try and watch each other. Make sure somebody doesn't quit sweating. We just try not to push it as hard as we would on a better day," Wood said.
So what is a better day?
"75, 80 degrees, a little sun and a little breeze blowing," Wood said.
Despite the high temperatures, reaching nearly triple digits, Fick says he'll take it over a cold, South Dakota day.
"It's hot but it's also not negative 40," Fick said.
