A Sioux Falls mother remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash last Friday.
It happened on East 10th Street at about 5:30 in the afternoon in front of K-Mart. Police say the driver who caused the crash was drunk and is now facing charges; he made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
24-year-old Tim Popkes of Canistota is charged with his second DWI and vehicular battery after police say he caused a three-vehicle crash on East.10th Street.
Police say Popkes was in the pickup and crashed head-on into Kammie Toussaint's mini van.
"After that crash, the van then spun and hit a third vehicle involved in that crash," Sioux Falls Police public information officer Sam Clemens said.
According to police, the driver of that third vehicle is going to be okay, but Toussaint was taken to Avera Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Two of her three children had minor injuries and are going to be okay.
The crash is still under investigation, but after interviewing witnesses and those involved, police say they have a good idea of how Popkes drove directly into Toussaint's van.
"The van was in the inside lane and the Pontiac was in the outside lane. He crossed completely through the center turning lane and struck the van in the driving lane," Clemens said.
KELOLAND News talked with Toussaint's husband Monday afternoon, who was up at the hospital. Randy tells KELOLAND News his wife is doing a little better, but has a long road to recovery.
