A man accused of killing a young mother in 1989 has pleaded no contest to 2nd degree manslaughter as part of a deal.

The judge suspended 10 years in prison for Kim Aune, who gets credit for the 421 days he's served since his arrest.

Aune had been charged with shooting Kimberly Eidsness at a rural Minnehaha County home on November 13, 1989.  Aune was interviewed after Eidsness' death but never charged.

New evidence and interviews led to Aune's arrest in Lake County, Florida, in 2015.

Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan says today's sentence isn't what his office initially hoped for, but it changes the cause of death in the case from suicide to homicide.

Hear from the victim's family about their thoughts on today's sentencing coming up tonight on KELOLAND News.
