32 people in Orlando remain in the hospital with six in critical condition, and vigils for the victims of the shooting continue to pop up all over the country. On Tuesday, President Obama said national security experts say it does not appear the shooter was given orders from militants overseas, but that he had absorbed radical propaganda.
In total, the shooter killed 49 people at a gay nightclub called Pulse in Orlando. It is reported that some people tried to hide in bathroom stalls and they also played dead on the ground, in hopes of escaping alive.
Life stopped for hundreds of victims, friends, and family members in Orlando, Florida. The FBI is currently investigating the wife of the man who attacked the Orlando club to see if she actually knew about her husband's plans and if she could have stopped him.
"It's a cowardly act, and it strikes at the heart of America. It's heartbreaking," Sheriff Mike Milstead, Minnehaha Co., said.
As we have seen, this type of situation can happen to anyone, anywhere. The question is, how do you stay safe when there is an active shooter. Milstead says every situation is different, but there are three rules that may help.
"If there was an active shooter, we've preached the run, hide, fight," Milstead said.
Milstead says the most important point on the list is number one.
"Get out of there. That's the first option," Milstead said.
If you cannot do that, he says try to hide in the best place possible. If it comes to this, he says fight the attacker if you can. In Orlando, some people tried to hide in bathrooms, and others played dead to stay alive. The suspect also continued to shoot the victims on the floor. Milstead says he can neither recommend or not recommend this. It all depends on what is happening.
"Their last choice was to play dead and it apparently worked for some. Not for others," Milstead said.
Most importantly, Milstead has this recommendation. He says do not let what happened in Orlando stop you from living your life.
"Be alert. Have some options. Understand what to do if something like that happens, but I don't want people to cower in their own homes and be afraid to go outside and do what they do as Americans," Milstead said.
