State Investigating Silt Contamination In Rapid City Creek

South Dakota's Department of Environment and Natural Resources is investigating a complaint about silt buildup in Rapid Creek due to a Rapid City road construction project.

A retaining pond spill of dirt and silt in late April left the creek water with a murky appearance. DENR did an on-site inspection earlier this month, and a report is due by the end of next week.

Kelli Buscher with DENR says the biggest problem with silt is that it affects fish and fish reproduction.

The city didn't learn of the state probe until Tuesday.

City spokesman Darrell Shoemaker says the contractor has been informed that it needs to report such incidents. He says the contractor also will need to clean up the site and any contaminants.
