Nice Weather Helping Planting Season

This week's sunshine and warm temperatures are kick-starting planting season for many farmers across KELOLAND. Cherry Rock Farms in Brandon battled flooding two years ago. Right now, the owners are grateful for the mild weather.

One by one, new crops drop into the soil on the southern edge of Brandon.

"We're blessed to have this kind of weather right now," David Picasso said.

As the field begins to take shape, Cherry Rock Farms owners David Picasso and Marco Patzer take stock.

"Everything is looking really good. The soil, the weather, plants are all looking good. We're in early. Things are looking up," Patzer said.

It's not always this smooth. A few years back, this field was under about eight feet of water. A third of the crop was lost due to flooding from heavy rains.

"Yeah no comparison to two years ago anyway," Picasso said.

"That was pretty devastating but we managed and here we are still," Patzer said.

They're taking advantage of the beautiful weather and making sure the farm that's been in the family since the 1920s keeps on providing quality produce for local customers.

As the planting season continues, Picasso has one simple request for our KELOLAND weathermen.

"Keep the good stuff coming. 3/4 of an inch of rain once a week would be fine," Picasso said.

Cherry Rock staggers its planting so if there's a bad weather event such as hail or flooding, they have more plants on hand that they can put in.
