If you want to sign up your kid for an activity but don't know where to start, or where to find the money, a program called "Connecting Kids" is for you. It's run by the Sioux Empire United Way and it's getting children who can't afford to participate, in the game.

Believe it or not, summer is around the corner and with that comes activities for kids. Brandi Miller with the United Way says unfortunately, only 73 percent of children from low-income families take part in extracurricular activities.

"And that's compared to 90 percent of kids from high-income families," Miller said.

Miller says the United Way program "Connecting Kids" helps hook families up with different options they might not know about, such as The First Tee of South Dakota. It can also provide money to pay for them. First Tee introduces youngsters to golf while teaching life skills.

"That's what totally sets us apart is the unique aspect of the healthy habits and the nine core values. It happens so seamlessly. Even though the kids are chipping and putting. We might be talking about how they can respect their room once they get home. Did they make their bed? Did they respect themself, did they brush their teeth and comb their hair this morning?" Coralee Jorgensen with The First Tee said.

With all this rainy weather, golf may be at the back of your mind, but now is the time to get your kids signed up for local programs.

"We partner with 21 local organizations. It ranges from sports like golf or soccer to theatre camps, arts, music," Miller said.

And last year, around 600 kids were exposed to the developmental activities that otherwise would have missed out.

If you need help finding a spot for your child or you need a scholarship, you can visit the Sioux Empire United Way website.
