After a 70-mile. high-speed pursuit through Nebraska, a man wanted on murder charges has been arrested.
U.S. Marshals chief deputy Scott Rolstad said authorities received information that Jared Stone was at a home in Mission, SD. But when the marshal's office arrived, he was not there.
After authorities in western South Dakota and Nebraska were notified, a high-speed pursuit began in Nebraska. Rolstad said Stone fired three times at authorities during the pursuit.
Just after Stone crossed the Wyoming border, he was involved in a standoff that shut down Interstate 80 and gave up peacefully after being cornered.
Wyoming Highway Patrol Sgt. David Wagener says authorities deployed tire-deflation sticks on Interstate 80 at the Wyoming-Nebraska state line. Stone remained in his vehicle for nearly half an hour before surrendering without incident.
Burns said that Stone was aided and harbored after he fled the murder scene on Friday, April 22.
Authorities think Stone traveled to Luverne and Worthington, MN before heading to Le Mars, IA. It's believed that Stone then traveled to the Presho area before arriving in Mission on Wednesday.
"(Stone) was aided in his escape, he was harbored and concealed," Burns said. "Is it worth going to jail to help this person escape from their own accountability?"
He had a strong message to those who may be accused with helping Stone elude authorities.
"You have to weigh how important is this. There's the public safety aspect," Burns said. "If you are more concerned with helping this person perpetrate their crime, or helping them remain a danger to the public, then what does it mean to your person liberty?"
Stone is charged with first-degree murder after the death of 28-year-old Baptiste White Eyes.
