The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources is allowing the DemKota Ranch Beef processing plant in Aberdeen to use treated wastewater from a holding cell for irrigation on a one-time basis so the plant can free up emergency holding space.

Jim Wendte of the department's waste management program and Dan DeHaan of New Angus LLC discussed the plans with Brown County commissioners during Tuesday's meeting.

Wendte says DemKota Ranch Beef will be allowed to discharge the treated water through irrigation methods before the company has attained a permit, but the department wanted the Brown County Commission's approval before giving the beef plant a green light.

DemKota has two wastewater holding cells.
