State and local leaders are looking for ways to build a stronger defense against security threats at the Sioux Falls airport. The talks come just over a week after deadly bombings shook Brussels. Senator John Thune spent the afternoon gaining local insight on the state of airport security in Sioux Falls.

"Through the course of our discussions we determined there were some things we could do to make the airport even more secure, but I think we do a really good job here," Sen. John Thune said.

As lawmakers on Capitol Hill discuss new ways to improve security, local officials say it's important for smaller airports to have a voice in the matter.

"We want to make sure that we're involved and that the needs of a small airport are also measured against the realities of a large airport. Trying to implement some changes or security requirements in Atlanta would be maybe difficult to do in Sioux Falls from a resource basis," Sioux Falls Regional Airport Executive Director Dan Letellier said.

Some air travelers say they aren't concerned about traveling in this part of the country.

"Not too much in the Midwest. I think we're pretty safe," air traveler Cindy Lindahl said.

When it comes to airport security, Thune says even smaller airports need to be a part of the discussion.

"We always assume bad groups, terrorist organizations, folks who want to do harm in this country, will hit more populated areas, and those are kind of the hard targets, but there are soft targets all across the country," Sen. Thune said.

That's why the lines of communication have been opened at home.

Next week, Thune and the rest of a senate committee will hear from TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger who will speak on how well the U.S. is prepared to handle transportation-related threats. Additionally, U.S. lawmakers are working on bills that would expand the pre-check program and better secure sensitive areas in airports.
